Bell Foundry
Jul 05, 2004
We had a trip out to Taylors Bell Foundry at Loughborough on Thursday last week. I’ve put some new photos up from the day. You can see more at the King’s Town Ringers page. We also had a ring on the foundry bells so there’s a new tower in the ringing section. The first tower I’ve visited without a dedication! It was a good day out, definitely worth taking the day off for. We learnt loads of stuff and luckily it was a nice day. I think Chris quite enjoyed driving the minibus as well.
The weekend wasn’t great, it was the civic society open weekend which meant Trinity tower had to be opened Saturday and Sunday. Because of problems with the electrics we didn’t have to open Lowgate. We were there from 11 – 4 on Saturday and 12 – 4 on Sunday. Luckily there was a wedding at Lowgate so we got a chance to sneak off and earn some money ringing for them at 2.30. We didn’t get as many visitors as in other years but that may have had something to do with bad planning, I don’t think it was advertised that much and Trinity church wasn’t open – their open weekend was last weekend!
We attempted a quarter of Cambridge Major at Trinity last night, it would have been my first with eight working bells. Unfortunately after three false starts it was obvious we weren’t going to get it. It wasn’t too bad as I got about 20 minutes practise at surprise major – much more than I’ve had before. I think I did ok, next time we should get it. 7.00 on a Sunday may not be the best time to attempt these things!
